Frequently Asked Questions

Uncertain what counselling is about, how it can benefit you, and what to expect? Here are some Frequently Asked Questions and if you have any others that come to mind, I encourage booking at 15 minute consultation using the “Book Now” button to discuss any other questions or concerns.

Seeking support from a Registered Counselling Therapist or other mental health professional provides a safe and supportive space to discuss and explore what you may be feeling, experiencing, worrying about or wanting to explore in a neutral space. Counsellors are available to provide support, encourage and challenge you to look at things in your life in a new perspective. Counsellors provide guidance and suggestions based on your concerns or experiences to cope, change or adapt to the situation depending on what you want to achieve. Counselling is a collaborative process between you and your therapist where the main goal is for you to better understand yourself and how you can be your best self!

I like to explain this as a tiered approach. At the top there are your Psychiatrists, they diagnose, prescribe medication and may provide some additional therapeutic treatment but overall are considered the “doctor’s” of mental health. Next we have Psychologists who can provide assessments and diagnoses along with therapeutic treatment such as talk therapy. Finally there are Counselling therapists and Psychotherapists who can provide assessments (but no diagnoses), and therapeutic treatment.

I always encourage clients to check with their insurance provider to determine which provider type is covered to ensure a continuity of supports and little to no disruption.

You do not need a referral for counselling! You can self-refer instantly at this link.

No! You can attend counselling for everything and anything. You may want to learn more about a recent mental health diagnosis, or you may want to find ways to improve your relationships. You may want tools for parenting or want to explore who you are and who you may want to be. You may be  seeking support building confidence and/or having a better relationship with your body. You may be looking for skills to manage stress or want better sleep. Reasons to begin counselling are endless and can also focus on how mental wellness affects physical well-being.

In our first session, I will review consent and confidentiality with you followed by a brief intake to complete which helps me get a sense of who you are, your lifestyle and what your primary concerns are. We will also discuss expectations of therapy and how to make the most of our time together. You do not need to prepare anything in advance, just bring yourself and we will take it at your pace.

Sessions are 45-50 minutes each.
